Moments after his parents, Kayla and Mike, were about to take their newborn baby home, a doctor reviewed Sawyer’s chart. Without notice, their five-day-old baby was being rushed off to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, almost two hours from their home. All of a sudden, the young couple was in a strange, big city trying to cope with the terrifying news that their baby had five congenital heart defects and needed open heart surgery – immediately. They had been forced to leave their support system back home to get life-saving care for their son.
Thankfully they found love and support in the extended family at RMH Toronto.
Love and support which has helped Mike and Kayla through four frightening return stays in Toronto in the six months since Sawyer was born. As they learned more about the genetic disorder, DiGeorge Syndrome, responsible for Sawyer’s heart defects, as well as his many other serious health issues, the new parents relied on the support they found at RMH Toronto.
Supportive services including our Home for Dinner program. After a long, stressful day at the hospital, not only was it a huge relief for Mike and Kayla to return home to a warm, home-cooked meal, courtesy of kind volunteers, but their time spent bonding with other parents was invaluable.
Away from their friends and family, Mike and Kayla found comfort confiding in other parents who understood their sadness and fears because, sadly, they too were living through their worst nightmare.
