Volunteer Profile: Alex
Name: Alex
Volunteer Role: Woodworking workshop
Alex began volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Toronto on March 9, 1990. In his 22 years of selfless service, he has never missed a day or a class!
Every Wednesday evening for two hours, Alex offers a woodworking class – delighting families staying at the House with a unique new skill, a treasured keepsake and an extremely popular workshop that attracts 15-25 people each week.
A long-time employee of Toronto Parks and Recreation before he retired in 2007, Alex arrives each week with all the tools and materials participants need to create their masterpieces. Not only does he contribute his time to teach the workshop, but he also donates all the supplies as well!
For each class, Alex brings in a different unpainted item made of wood that children and parents assemble, sand, paint to their liking! For each themed holiday, he brings in a different activity that is related to that holiday or time of year. Christmas and Halloween are among the most popular!
Alex puts his heart into his role as a volunteer at the House and the families who take part in his woodworking classes are so appreciative of his time, talent and dedication.
The workshop provides them with a special opportunity to work on something together, spend time focused on a fun activity --- wonderful gifts that help both child and parent to heal better together during their stay at the House.
