Non-Fiction Book Writing
JK-Grade 3 students are currently working on completing a study of non-fiction texts. We began our unit by looking at the characteristics of non-fiction books, and analyzing many of the books in our school library to determine whether or not they fit the characteristics.
Students especially enjoyed when their Grades 4-9 reading buddies read them chapters from non-fiction books that they chose from our library. This was a very fun and special day in our classroom as the Grades JK-3 students got to show off their skills by pointing out the glossaries, indexes, table of contents and diagrams they found in the books their buddies read.
Now, students are working very hard to finish writing their own non-fiction books based on topics they chose themselves. Some topics being explored in our classroom include cars, cats , stingrays and the alphabet. After choosing a topic, students wrote five question chapter titles such “Which countries make cars?” and “Can cats swim? You can see some of these chapters in our school photo gallery.
Enjoy and we hope you learn something interesting.
