Meet Emma and her family

Raising funds for the House to give back

Emma brings out the best in everybody, says her mom, Lisa Miedema. Since being born prematurely in May 2014 with a congenital brain disorder, the little girl and her family have spent more than a month, on and off, at the House while she has undergone a series of lifesaving surgeries.

“With every new challenge, Emma has amazed us with her fighting spirit,” says Lisa about herself, her husband, Matthew, and Emma’s six-year-old big brother, Lucas. The family lives in Thunder Bay, Ont.

“It is difficult to put into words what Ronald McDonald House Toronto means to us,” she says. “It has been our lifeline, a place to regain much needed strength at our most vulnerable time. Staying at the House has allowed us to focus on Emma. We haven’t had to worry about finding a place to eat, to sleep or do laundry.

In gratitude, the family is now giving back in a big way. They launched a fundraising campaign for the House in December 2014 and have already raised close to $15,000! Check out their fundraising page and an emotional video about Emma's journey.

“Ronald McDonald House Toronto has been there for us every step of the way,” says Lisa.
